Pizza Around The World

Pizza has become an international phenomenon in that wherever you go in the world there will be pizza. Pizza was adapted to more cultures and restaurants compared to most other dishes around the world. When some local school children were asked where pizza initially came out, they believed it was out of the area in which they dwelt. And rightly so, because pizza was adapted to whatever region from the world you live. Barring this thought, pizza does have an intriguing history and that begins in Greece, contrary to what most people probably think and that could be Italy.

There are conflicting stories revolving around the origin of pizza; one narrative is that the phrase ‘Pizza’ is derived from the Greek phrase Picea. Picea is an adjective that refers to the black coating left on the base of dough from the burning ashes that were used in ancient ovens. The very first pizzas were likely baked in wood burning stoves and might well happen to be black on the bottom from the ash. Another story is the Greek Flatbread was baked in an earthenware platter and was known as piada. Whichever is true, pizza did originate in Greece although not in the form that we know it today. The Italians are accountable for the contemporary creation of pizza which are the flatbread with a tomato topping, cheese and of course anything else you’d like to place on it.

When we were in Venice, Italy, the pizza which was served to us was a private size and was very sparse. It was not sliced since it was meant to be wrapped up like a burrito and eaten this way. The opposite was true of pizza sold on the street carts and wasn’t really pizza but foccacia that’d pizza toppings on it. These were sold in little portions that could be consumed out of control.

In Holland, we purchased that an everything pizza and contrary to the way it’s made from the United States, every segment had a different topping. We had been used to this ‘everything’ pizza that had everything scattered throughout so that everybody might have a taste of everything. In this case, you could just have the toppings which were about the slices you picked.

When we had been In Japan, Pizza Hut offered a California Pizza that has been a baked pizza shell topped with shredded lettuce and tomato. From what I know, the California Pizza that is sold today has many different seafood and fish like tuna, squid and shrimp and seaweed! If you get on the internet and hunt pizza in Japan you will see all sorts of interesting mixtures!

Pizza in the United States has obtained on all types and is tasty on all counts. Previously, the thick crusted pizza which took half an hour to bake was very popular. Thin crusted pizzas have taken their location and sport all types of toppings. Let us begin with the fundamental pizza which would be just with a tomato topping, cheese and likely pepperoni if you are so inclined. I like my pizza with plenty of vegetables such as bell peppers, peppers, olives and mushrooms.

Popular styles of pizza are: Hawaiian, Mexican, Southwest Barbecued Chicken and among my favorites, Chinese Barbecued Duck Pizza. The Hawaiian Pizza as featured in most restaurants is made with Canadian bacon (Portuguese Sausage would be similar to it) and Pineapple alongside the cheese and tomato. Southwest BBQ Chicken Pizza includes a topping similar to BBQ Sauce alongside the chicken, red bell peppers and red onions and maybe cilantro not to mention cheese. Chinese BBQ Duck Pizza utilizes Hoisin sauce rather than tomatoes and does have cheese, which is not a frequent item in the Chinese diet.

Along with flat pizzas there is calzone which got its name from the shape of the bottom of men’s pants in Naples, Italy during another century. Today it is possible to find pizza bagels, pizza dogs, stuffed pizza and on and on and on. Pizza is a close competitor of this All-American Hamburger and may have surpassed the burger as everyone’s favorite. Whichever you enjoy your pizza, just enjoy it and if you are in the mood, then try various styles, just for the fun of it.
